Dr. Karas is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and Board Eligible for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He received his medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Ecuador in Quito, Ecuador and completed his General Surgery Residency at Stony Brook University Medical Center in Stony Brook, New York. Dr. Karas completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery through Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, New York and continued his training in a fellowship in Colon & Rectal Surgery through Indiana University School of Medicine in Mooresville, Indiana. Dr. Karas is a consultant surgeon of the Colon & Rectal Specialty for UF Health Cancer Center (formerly MD Anderson Cancer Center of Orlando).
Dr. Karas specializes in laparoscopic-assisted colon surgery for benign and malignant disease, anal physiology testing for chronic constipation, and fecal incontinence. He also specializes in anal rectal ultrasound, sphincter saving techniques for rectal cancer and surgery for inflammatory bowel disease.
